“A dedicated and compassionate caregiver at St. Joseph Hospital for decades, Melvin Schwartz and his wife demonstrated their friendship and support for the Hospital by establishing a legacy through a generous charitable planned gift.”
Welcome, Amy Hogan!
Amy Hogan has had a heart for giving since she was a child. Growing up in Palos Verdes, her parents, Jim and Diane Staes, supporters of Providence Little Company of Mary for many decades, demonstrated the importance of service every day.
“My parents’ view of philanthropy really shaped mine, and it has affected both my husband, Steve, and me,” Amy shares. Her father has been involved with Providence Little Company of Mary Foundation since 1996 and was on the Foundation Board from 1996 until 2003. Her mom, Diane Staes, worked in the spiritual care department.
Beyond serving and giving back to the community, Amy’s family has experienced the compassionate care that Providence Little Company of Mary is known for several times, and she has always been happy to share those experiences with others. And when Amy needed emergency surgery, the importance of that exceptional care hit home for her.
One night Amy was rushed to the emergency department at Providence Little Company of Mary Torrance. “Everyone there was very helpful trying to figure out exactly what it was,” she recalls. Amy remembers the day after her surgery when a volunteer from the spiritual team came to visit and offered her communion. “I couldn’t eat at that point. She was so kind and asked, ‘would you like to pray together instead?’ Being Catholic, that spiritual aspect at the hospital is very comforting.”
“When we were looking at where we wanted to make an impact with our philanthropy, we thought about that a lot.” Amy and her husband learned about needs within the emergency department and decided to make a gift. “The experience you have at the hospital is not only due to the wonderful doctors, nurses and staff, but those experiences are also due to members of the community investing in the hospital, helping to fund new equipment, new facilities and expansions, for others, especially those in need,” said Amy.
A graduate of UCLA, Amy is an active community volunteer and has led several charitable organizations. She and Steve have five children and two dogs and are deeply invested in South Bay. “Joining the Providence Little Company of Mary Foundation Board of Directors to make an even greater impact is extremely meaningful to me, and I am honored and thrilled to fulfill this duty.”
